Living in a developed country with an abundance amount of resources, it's no surprise that my ecological footprint was a huge 8.5 hectares. If everyone lived in a developed country like Canada and they all lived like me, we would need 4.5 more Earths in order to staisfy everyone's needs and wants. However, we have only one Earth, and there is only 1.8 biologically productive hectares per person on this Earth. Even though my footprint is at a gigantic 8.5 hectares, that is definitly going to change once I move to a smaller place over the summer. A place that's closer to Mary Ward, and a smaller house overall. Since it's a townhouse, the amount of electricity spent on heating and air conditioning should significantly drop, and with less electricity use means lower electricity bills and more energy conservation.
There are many different ways for us to conserve energy. We can turn off the appliances and lights when they're not in use, open the blinds instead of turning on the lights during the day, taking public transportation, etc. Plus, the more energy that we conserve means that more money can be spent on something else. I think the website is a great site for people to change the way that they live in order to lower their ecological footprint. While we live here and consume the Earth's resources like there's no tomorrow, other places around the world are suffering and all living in poverty. We need to change, and just us making change won't be enough. The government has to promote changes as well. If we have politicians like Harper ignoring the fact that global warming is present with us, it'll only be a matter of time before the human race wipes itself out.

I totally agree with you that we are wasting so much of our natural resouces and are doing nothing to conserve what we have left before it's too late. I also agree that we are wasting so much of our natural resources when we only have 1 Earth and one lifetime. It's also unfair to those around us even in this developed country today, that we still see people on the streets suffering and have nothing when we are leaving an average of 7-8 ecological footprints in this world. If we all conserved and did something to rid the injustice of poverty in our world, every one would have the essentials for living. We in this world have so much, an abundance of goods that we are just wasting it and are creating a larger ecological footprint when we could be conserving and sharing to lower that.
It seems like your really have something against Stephen Harper. That aside, I agree that people are creating more trouble for the environment through our greediness. Who needs four cars for one household? I think that the ratio of wants to needs is totally disproportional and should be changed. How hard is it for a person to choose a reusable bag over a plastic bag? You're right by saying that we aren't doing enough and that we definitely need to get our act together if we want to live to see our grandchildren climbing trees and birds chirping.
Sup man,
When i did the quiz to find out my ecological footprint i also got a number quite close to yours (8.6). I probably got that number primarily of the size of my house.
Also, i just recently moved to a MUCH smaller house than my previous one and is also closer to school and I find that I am using less energy nowadays as opposed to the past. I recently did the test again and got a score of 6.2 so I'm sure yours will go down too.
